The book I referenced Sunday: “Serve God Save The Planet” by J. Matthew Sleeth
(this list comes from the book)… I know, some of the ideas are a little out there… don’t try and do them all… maybe just start with one.
Lord, help me TODAY to:
--Memorize one Bible verse about God’s love for his creation, such as Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.”
--Pick up and throw away any trash I see on the ground
--Turn off the faucet while brushing my teeth and shaving
--Turn my thermostat up three degrees (in summer) or down three degrees (in winter).
--Wash my clothes in the coolest water possible.
--Turn off the lights, TV, radio, and stereo when I leave the room for more than 60 seconds.
--Give something away
--Spend at least 10 minutes with you quietly in nature
Lord, help me THIS WEEK to:
--read Psalms 23, 24, 104, 147, 148
--Take a day of rest (no shopping, work, or driving)
--Bike, walk, or carpool instead of driving
--Visit the grocery store only once
--Consciously combine trips and errands
--Recycle everything I can
--Change at least 5 light bulbs in my home to compact fluorescents
--Donate a box of books to the library
--Buy only “tree free” toilet paper, paper towels, and tissues from recycled paper
--air-dry my laundry
--check out a faith-based organization working to save God’s created earth
Lord, help me this MONTH to:
--stock up on handkerchiefs, cloth shopping bags, and cloth napkins so I can kick the paper habit
--clean out my closet and donate clothes I have not worn in the past year
--install low-flow showerheads
--replace church light bulbs with compact fluorescents
--talk to my church and workplace about using recycled paper in copying machines and printers
--clean or replace air filters throughout my house
--unplug the TV and stereo when not in use, or put them on a switched power strip or outlet
Lord, help me this YEAR to:
--plant deciduous trees along the south side of my house to save on cooling costs
--set up a recycling program at my workplace, church, or school
--pick one endangered species and do something to help save it.
--When appliances and lighting fixtures need to be replaced, purchase only the most efficient Energy Stars items
--Start a vegetable garden at home or organize a community or church garden
--ask my church to adopt a local stream, park, or roadway for cleanup, monitoring, or restoration
--ask my utility company to conduct an energy audit on my home
--When I replace my car, purchase a hybrid or one that gets great mileage and has low emissions
